Unfortunately, OpenGL has been falling out of favor over the last few years, especially in the games industry. It is not open source, and largely proprietary engines now rely on display drivers, the drivers which actually control the graphics hardware. The open source drivers are very very old and hardware-dependent and do not even parse OpenGL specifications, much less make use of any extensions.
Here's a free demo of Quake III for gamers and modders to experiment with. I've been using it for some time now, and it's working great for the large majority of people – great for makeshift workstations, multiplayer gaming, 3-D modeling, etc. It also loads faster than Quake 3 Arena and lets you view the game in any direction. It also runs on Linux and FreeBSD, including Ubuntu – as long as the graphics drivers are installed.
Remember: Quake 3 supports a variety of OpenGL versions (v1.1, v1.2, and v1.3), just like 3D Studio MAX. The versions are stored in the game's directories. They're not separate extensions \"plug-ins\" as in some games, they're simply included with the game.
Opengl is a framework for writing OpenGL application in the programming languages C, C++, and Python. Opengl is distributed as source codes, libraries, and header files for Unix and Windows operating systems however it does not include a compiler or an IDE. An opengl-compiler (that is not a part of OpenGl library), that compiles the library into a binary, is available. 7211a4ac4a
